How to Keep Your Child Active During the Summer Holidays

7 min read

Summer holidays are here, and while it’s the perfect time for kids to relax and recharge, it’s also important to keep them moving, engaged, and having fun. At Gymfinity Kids, we believe every child is born to move, and summer is the perfect time to inspire confidence through activity.

So, how can you keep your child active (and happy!) during the long break? Here are our top tips, straight from the UK’s leading provider of children’s ninja and gymnastics classes:

1. Sign Up for a Gymnastics Summer Holiday Camp

There’s no better way to stay active than by flipping, jumping, and balancing your way through the holidays. Our Gymfinity Kids summer holiday camps are packed with gymnastics, ninja challenges, games, and themed activities, all led by experienced coaches in a safe, inspiring environment.

Children build strength, flexibility, and coordination while having a blast with new friends. And the best bit? They’ll come home happy, tired, and proud of what they’ve achieved.

Every one of our holiday camps is themed – the summer camps will see the ‘all around the world’ theme launch the kids onto an exciting adventure!

Take a look at what your child can expect at our summer camps:

  • Set sail: Get introduced to the continent of the week!
  • Teamwork: Bond with your fellow campers through different challenges.
  • Put on your explorer hat: Learn about the culture & star athletes of the continent.
  • Picnic time: Snack breaks and lunch break – don’t forget your packed lunch!
  • Get active: Structured gymnastics and ninja sessions on the gym floor.
  • Arts & crafts: Be inspired by the world adventures and get creative!
  • Fun & Games: Our fun coaches will have you giggling & playing with your new friends.
  • Cool Down: Wind down the camp day with a game and a reflection of the day before pick-up.

If your child is new to gymnastics but excited to give it a try, our Gymfinity Kids summer holiday camps are the perfect place to start. They’ll get comfortable with the equipment and learn fundamental gymnastics and ninja skills, making it a fantastic introduction to our gyms!

2. Create a Routine That Includes Movement

Summer can quickly turn into screens and sofa time without a little structure. Try creating a simple daily routine that includes a block of physical activity. Whether it’s practising handstands in the garden, a family walk, or a mini home ninja course, just 30 minutes of movement makes a big difference.

For our Gymfinity families, we recommend using online gymnastics tutorials to keep your child practising their skills at home, even when they’re not in the club. If you’re going on holiday and have to miss the odd Gymfinity Kids class, get your child to run through their skills to keep them ingrained in their memory!

3. Create games to integrate activity into their days

We’ve come up with some top games to keep your child engaged with movement while on summer holidays. Try one of the below out or get creative and invent your own games with your child!

Create a “Movement Jar”

This one’s a family favourite! Design your own “movement jar” filled with fun ideas like crab walks, star jumps, or mini obstacle courses to keep kids engaged every day.

Grab a jar and fill it with slips of paper, each with a fun movement challenge. See some quick suggestions below:

  • 10 star jumps
  • Bear crawl to the kitchen
  • Balance on one leg for 30 seconds
  • Create your own gymnastics routine to music

Let your child pick one or two a day – it’s an easy, screen-free way to get moving!

Start a Sticker Challenge

Kids love goals, and they love rewards even more! Create a simple activity sticker chart with daily movement goals like “jump for 1 minute,” “do 5 forward rolls,” or “climb like a ninja.” Hit 5 stickers and they earn a treat or extra park time!

It’s a brilliant way to stay consistent without it feeling like a chore.

4. Explore Local Parks and Playgrounds

The UK is full of beautiful green spaces just waiting to be explored, and the parks are full of opportunities to move. Plan regular visits to playgrounds, nature trails, local parks or outdoor gyms where you can take your little one on mini adventures to encourage climbing, swinging, and balancing.

Create obstacle courses using benches, trees, and paths. Or you can create a simple challenge, like who can balance on one foot the longest or climb the frame the fastest! Or try a “movement scavenger hunt” – find something to climb, balance on, hop over, and hang from.

Bring friends along for races or team games. It’s a great way to build motor skills while spending quality time outdoors. And it’s free fun!

5. Join a Weekly Ninja or Gymnastics Class this summer

Many of our clubs stay open throughout the summer, so if your child wants to try something new, enrol them on one of our ninja or gymnastics classes near you!

Our classes help kids stay active, social, and consistent in their development. It’s a fantastic way to maintain progress and confidence, even when school is on pause.

Classes are designed for every age and ability, from toddlers discovering movement to advanced gymnasts perfecting their routines. Every session helps build physical ability and emotional confidence, one cartwheel at a time.

And if your child is yet to join our ninja or gymnastics classes and is feeling nervous about undertaking a new challenge, spend the summer getting them active and familiar with gymnastics movements to help prepare them to join.

As many of our clubs are open throughout the summer, you can get them started in a class during the summer months before the big September rush, when our classes get exceptionally busy!

6. Celebrate Every Achievement

Staying active is as much about confidence as it is about fitness. Whether your child masters a cartwheel, climbs the ninja wall, or tries something totally new, be their biggest cheerleader.

At Gymfinity Kids, we know that small wins create big confidence, and confident kids become happy, resilient adults.

7. Get the Whole Family Involved

Make movement a family thing! Try morning stretch sessions, post-dinner dance-offs, or weekend mini sports days in the garden. You can also go for family bike rides, nature walks, or even set up a backyard obstacle course.

Turning physical activity into shared moments not only keeps everyone active but also strengthens family bonds and creates lasting summer memories.

And when grown-ups join in, kids are more likely to get involved and have loads of fun doing it.
