At Gymfinity Kids, we know something powerful happens when children play. Not just random running around (although there’s plenty of energy too!), but purposeful play! Movement experiences designed to help children learn, grow, explore and thrive while having fun.
As we celebrate the Purposeful Play theme of 2026 UK Coaching Week, it’s the perfect time to recognise the incredible role coaches play in creating playful environments where every child can feel confident, included and inspired to move… because play is never “just play” for kids.
Why Play Matters So Much
Play is one of the most important parts of childhood. It supports physical development, emotional well-being, creativity, communication and resilience. Through play, children discover what their bodies can do, how to solve problems, how to work with others and how to bounce back when things don’t go to plan.
And of course, the most important thing about play is that it creates joy!
When children associate movement with excitement, achievement and belonging, they are far more likely to stay active for life. That positive relationship with sport and exercise starts early, and it starts with fun.
In our preschool movement, gymnastics classes and ninja activities, play helps children develop balance, coordination, strength and confidence naturally through movement challenges they genuinely enjoy.

What Is Purposeful Play?
Purposeful play is playing with intention. It’s about creating activities that feel exciting and imaginative for children while also developing important physical, social and emotional skills.
Children may feel like they’re climbing through lava caves, balancing across rivers or racing through ninja missions, but underneath the fun, they’re learning agility, coordination, focus, teamwork and resilience.
Purposeful play allows coaches to meet children where they are developmentally, while still helping them progress! And the best sessions don’t feel like boring drills – they can feel like adventures.

What Are the Benefits?
The benefits of purposeful play go far beyond sport performance. Children who experience playful movement environments often develop:
- Greater confidence and self-belief
- Improved physical literacy and coordination
- Stronger social and communication skills
- Better emotional regulation and resilience
- Creativity and problem-solving abilities
- A positive relationship with physical activity
Play also supports wellbeing and mental health. It gives children opportunities to express themselves freely, take healthy risks, experience achievement and build friendships.
And because every child is different, purposeful play can be adapted to support a wide range of needs and abilities.

What Does Purposeful Play Look Like in a Session?
In a Gymfinity Kids session, purposeful play might look like obstacle courses that develop coordination, challenges that encourage teamwork or imaginative games that build confidence on apparatus.
A preschool warm-up could become a safari adventure. A ninja challenge might encourage children to test different movement strategies. Coaches may adapt activities to provide extra support, additional challenge or sensory-friendly approaches depending on the children in the group.
Importantly, purposeful play is inclusive, as there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to play.
Every child’s experience of play is shaped by factors including age, culture, ability, neurodiversity, confidence and life experience. Great coaching recognises this and creates environments where all children feel safe, welcomed and able to participate in ways that work for them.

Play for Performance
Sometimes people think play and performance sit at opposite ends of the spectrum, but the reality is quite the opposite, as play unlocks performance.
Children learn best when they are engaged, motivated and emotionally connected to what they are doing. Playful learning environments encourage experimentation, repetition and problem-solving without fear of failure.
We often see that a child who loves coming to our sessions will always make greater progress than a child who feels pressured or disconnected. In our gymnastics and ninja activities, this means children often develop skills faster because they are practising them naturally through exciting movement experiences.
Putting enjoyment first is exactly how a lifelong participation in sport is built!

Every Child Has the Right to Play
Play is not something children need to earn – we see it as an essential for healthy childhood development.
Children have the right to play, move, explore and learn in environments that support their wellbeing and individuality. Coaches play a vital role in protecting and promoting that right by creating positive spaces where children feel encouraged rather than judged.
When children feel psychologically safe, they become more willing to try, fail, learn and succeed, and that’s where real growth happens.

Play That Lasts
Purposeful play isn’t a one-off activity or a quick game at the start of a session. It’s a philosophy that can shape every moment of a child’s experience.
Embedding purposeful play into every session helps create environments where children can build skills, unlock confidence and develop a genuine love of movement that lasts far beyond the gym.
At Gymfinity Kids, that means weaving purposeful play into every gymnastics and ninja session, ensuring children of all ages, abilities and backgrounds have the opportunity to explore, challenge themselves and experience the joy that comes from being active.
When children enjoy the journey, performance follows, and their connection with sport can last a lifetime!
