William’s mum contacted our team after discovering the Gymfinity and Beyond campaign on our social media channels. Following her son’s first Gymfinity Kids Competition. Samantha kindly sent in the short passage below.

William’s Story

“I’m so enormously proud of my son William for taking part in his first Gymfinity Kids Competition. If it wasn’t for the patience of the understanding staff at Gymfinity Kids Farnborough he would have taken part in the Ninja Competition at all.

My son managed to turn up, but then needed to leave the competition after the warm up had finished. I could tell he was angry with himself and really upset. So, I suggested that he simply watch the competition this time and maybe try again at the all level event later in August.

However, a lovely member of the team (Club Manager Hayli) came over and encouraged William to help her in the arena to move mats etc. William refused to go when him name was called to compete.

The team at Gymfinity Kids gave William all the extra time that he needed, which gave him time to eventually build the courage to have a go. My son was given the chance to make his own course and was marked by one of the friendly judges.

All the children on the competition day receive a special Gymfinity Kids medal and we were delighted when William went on the podium to collect it. Knowing my son this was massive achievement in itself.

Then, the Coaches started calling out the names for the bronze, silver and gold medals. I was over the moon when William won a silver. Afterwards, trophies are awarded and one was awarded to, you guessed it…William for managing to take part in the end!

I know if William had just watched the competition, he would have gone home crushed. I can’t thank the staff enough for their dedication to include all children with all abilities.

William is Autistic and events like competitions can be an enormous struggle for him to even show up. Thanks to the understanding and acceptance of his condition at Gymfinity Kids he was able to take part.

The photograph is a rare picture of William smiling at his own achievements. I believe the boost to his self-esteem goes much further than competition day. I don’t think William will forget the special day ever.

Well done Gymfinity Kids!”
